MOOCing

I have seen the future and it works - wearing my hat as Honorary Fellow of Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, my MOOC on Shakespeare and his World, based on their collections, went live today -- and I already have over 9k student and 400 followers. Am so impressed by the enthusiasm, the hunger for learning, and the quality of some of the comments and questions. Amazing that digital technology can beam around the world the kind of content that previously was only available to people signed up for degrees and physically present in the lecture room.

  1. As one of your current participants - posting this on Tuesday of Week 2 of your Shakespeare and his World MOOC - I'll try to endorse your words Jonathan by reporting that 'I feel I am in the future and it really does work'!

On the cutting edge of online pedagogy as well as learning technology, and set to continue unfolding its riches along the route you've plotted for our collective journey into better understandings of Shakespeare's
    World(s) and Work(s).

    Many thanks.

  2. This course is fantastic. My wife and I are both signed up and last night we read The Merry Wives of Windsor together with our teenage daughter who is studying A Level English Lirerature. The experience reading the play as a family was so enjoyable. Many thanks to Jonathon - these on line courses really reach out to thousands of us.

  4. I am finding the course on Shakespeare absolutely fascinating. Although I am not going into all the reading recommended- just really scratching the surface - it has certainly educated me more than I ever thought it would. Thank you so much, Jonathan - for being such a brilliant and inspiring teacher! Maxine

  5. Jonathan. At the end of this wonderful 10 week course I just wanted to say thanks to you and all your collaborators. You are right about the value of the MOOC approach to the thousands of us all round the world.who have participated. If it is rerun,as I hope it will be, I would encourage people to join in however much or little they know already.

  9. I completely agree! with the two posts above, todlass and n-pogoda.

I relished every single week of the Shakespeare MOOC, and was so grateful to whomsoever invented this wonderful idea. As an accountant, I can't help wondering about how a MOOC is funded - we are told that there is no such thing as a free lunch - but I have feasted to fruition on your fabulous course content.

And there were no nutters in the comments sections! (Well, I ignored everything which questioned the authorship - life is too short to follow all that!)

  10. I add my complete agreement to the comments above about the Futurelearn MOOC. It may bear no resemblance to a free lunch, but there is no doubt in my mind that it is the best ten weeks entertainment that I have ever NOT paid for, and equally sure it is the best I have ever paid for too. Thank you Professor and your ever cheerful sidekick Jennifer.

  11. I enjoyed the course so much. I learned a great deal more about Shakespeare, and learned a new way to look at him - in the context of his world. A no-brainer you'd think since of course he was a product of his world.

  12. I've just done the course. It is a fantastic way to learn and I hope will offer real opportunities in future for learners who cannot (afford to) spend 3 years studying full time at university.
